Day 2: March 12, 2024

Hi All,

We had a wonderful day of service and evening of fun on our River Jazz Cruise down the Mississippi River.  Enjoy the day's reflection from Layla L. and Isabelle and the pictures they chose to share with you.

On our second day in New Orleans, we began our service work. After a restful night of sleep we began our day by waking up early, getting ready for our day, and preparing our lunches.  We headed to the house that we would be working on, where we met the Executive Director of Youth Rebuilding New Orleans, Prince, and other volunteer adults. We learned about the organization and introduced ourselves to one another and then started on our day. We learned many new things today, such as how to use a nail gun, chapsaw and screwdriver gun. We planted trees outside of the house, installed siding, and poured cement to make poles for a fence. There were many interesting facts to know about the materials we were using. During our service, we also learned valuable lessons about self worth. We learned about having confidence, taking actions, and not being afraid to try new things. We also spoke to other volunteers on site with us and got to know them, and their backgrounds. Overall, our service experience today helped broaden our horizons and taught us valuable lessons and skills to take with us.

This evening we reflected on the highlights of the day, which included watching the sunset on our river jazz cruise, being outside in the warm weather, working together and getting to know each other more, and seeing the quality and quantity of work we did today. Some of the consistently emphasized peaks of our day were speaking to others working on the same project and learning how to use certain tools that we had never used before. These experiences were not only fun, but allowed us to learn a significant amount of information about Youth Rebuilding New Orleans and the positive impact it has on many individuals affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Until tomorrow,

Isabelle and Layla
